China Eastern is offering cheap $850 fares from Chicago to Sydney via Shanghai PVG. Outbound transit is only 1h55m and return is 6h+. I'm worried about the outbound being delayed thus missing my Sydney flight. There is another flight to Sydney 4 hours later at midnight they could accommodate me on though. Anyone done this transfer? I think that should be pretty safe. While we often complain about PVG delays, inbound long haul flights get high priority. The 6 hour layover on the return is a bit awkward though because it's too long to spend at the airport, but too short to get a meaningful taste of Shanghai. If I were in your shoes, I'd stick with the outbound as planned, but try to swing an overnight layover on the return.
