So what do the bp scanners at gate actually do?

On AC112 on Monday we were boarding at C48 which is really tight with C47 or 49 - don't know which. That gate was boarding a flight to YUL at the same time.

2 pax in J (including one guy who I was thrilled to see leave given his behavior in the few minutes he was aboard the aircraft) and a few from Y ended up having to leave our aircraft because "oh crap, I'm on the wrong plane!" Not that they would have known that in time had there not been seat snafus because of it.

So how does this happen? What exactly is the BP scanner telling the GA when it gets scanned? Are they simply doing a name match at that point?
