Assuming you booked the CX award with AA miles, next time call AA before you book and have them book the revenue segment XXX-ORD and the award ticket ORD-XXX into one PNR. Yes it stinks to pay up front for a domestic flight to get your award gateway, but as others mentioned look at it as an insurance policy.
