The property needed a renovation before the hurricane. When I stayed there in April and May of 2017 it was easily 4-5 years overdue for a renovation. Little things like electrical and USB outlets that could have been temporarily fixed with power strips weren't even present.

Also, the service was below other Ritz-Carlton properties, including St. Thomas.

I also wouldn't be surprised if there was a dispute between the insurance company and the owners as to what should be covered because, as I understand it, this is often an issue.

Over on St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands, the owner of the Marriott couldn't rebuild without the bankrupt U.S. Virgin Islands territorial government levying a tourist tax that will go straight toward the rebuilding costs. On St. Croix, the Renaissance is still closed because the owner, the pension fund of the same bankrupt government, apparently doesn't have the money to pay for rebuilding the property and is trying to sell it.

But at least the Ritz-Carlton, San Juan did the right thing and closed up for rebuilding. The Ritz-Carlton, St. Thomas has been open -- it appears closed now -- under the St. Thomas Great Bay Resort name, despite extensive construction and almost no warnings to guests that they were staying at an active construction site with no real hotel services. I'm glad I stayed at the Wyndham Margaritaville when I was on St. Thomas in October instead of paying the pre-hurricane rates that Marriott was charging for the St. Thomas Great Bay Resort.
