Recent stay there - winter, 2019.
Problem: Yes, the lack of a desk or workspace in the room is a bit of a problem.
Other issue from posts above: Perhaps the luggage rack issue has been solved, as yes, there was a luggage rack in the larger of the two closets, and actually was a bit easier to use, to open & set up, than a lot of hotel luggage racks.
Price:
Paid less than £150 per night, which is VERY good for Central London, especially in Zone 1, especially so close to a major rail/tube station.
Getting a hotel of this quality in central London for under £150 is amazing value for money. You would be hard-pressed to find a hotel as nice as this for that price in Zone 1. It was helpful to have a 5k Marriott Rewards points bonus thrown in as a "grand opening" offer as well.
Convenient Location:
The hotel is a short walk from the London Bridge Rail / Underground station. A short walk from Tower Bridge. A HUGE Tesco Grocery store with a lot of fresh, ready-to-go food is just between the hotel and the London Bridge station *turning right out of the hotel, heading toward the station) for grabbing a lunch for a full-business day or for fueling up for tourist expeditions. Or, there's an amazing cheap Chinese take-away (Thames Takeaway) just a few minutes down the road in the other direction (turning left out of the hotel).
Staff:
The front desk staff are absolutely amazing - always so friendly, so kind, so cheerful, so positive, so helpful. They seemed very proud of their hotel, and to really enjoy helping their guests. What a great team!
Gym:
Keeping fit whilst travelling/working is very important to me. So, I really liked how the gym and its equipment were so clean and spotless (maybe that's because the hotel is new, but hopefully it stays that way. Liked the bright, but not overbearing colours - mitigates the "basement" feeling.
MR Platinum / Elite benefits:
Was offered Platnimum Amenity of either a gift (hotel credit/voucher) or or points. I chose points (more as habit, as they're usually a better value than whatever little gift the hotel is offering, altho' I was tired at the end of a long day, and hadn't bothered to ask how much the hotel voucher/credit was for.
For Breakfast, the front desk staff said that since they don't have an Executive lounge, they offer, instead of that, for the guest(s) to have either a free continental breakfast in their restaurant, or 750 points. I chose the breakfast, as it's quite substantial for a "continental" breakfast. It was absolutely delicious, large buffet with lots of options meats, cheeses, breads, cereals, fruits, and the local Bermondsey Bees honey (also for sale). I loved the focus on healthy options, and liked that certain hot/cooked foods were included (eggs, bacon, sausage, etc.) whilst allowing people to pay extra for specific a la carte items if needed.
As for a Platinum Upgrade, arriving at 5pm, I was given the option of accepting an "executive room" that was available on arrival, or waiting an hour for an upgrade to a Junior Suite. I chose to hold out for the suite whilst I grabbed dinner at a local take-away down the road I'd heard rave reviews about (Thames Takeaway - amazing)
The hotel lobby is absolutely stunning. I think even the staff would acknowledge, tho, that they need to figure out a second set of front doors for use in the winter to keep out the cold, but otherwise, a very grand entrance, faithfully restored. Same could be said for the Courtroom Bar.
The hallways and rooms were a departure from this, and quite modern (whether that's good or bad is probably a matter of individual taste - I could see how some would prefer to carry through the faithful restoration work with modern accents through to the rooms & halls, along the lines of what the Great Northern Hotel did at Kings Cross, or I could see how some would love the grandeur of the lobby then to retreat to a modern space). Rooms had several helpful lighting features to "customize" the room for mood/ambience, incl. backlights, and reading lights, etc. I liked the backlighting for getting work done on a laptop without the room being totally dark around. The bathroom was HUGE, and it was great to step into a shower that didn't feel like squeezing into a phone booth.
For a hotel this nice at that price, in Zone 1 of central London, a few minutes walk from a central rail & tube station, with such a great front desk staff, it's hard to beat.
