I was surprised at how lax they were, too. I even got away with having a few loose bottles of liquids in my suitcase, which I hadn't been able to fit into my sealed plastic bag. 99% of my flying is international medium to long haul, so I am actually more accustomed to having all the carry-on rules very strictly enforced.
I think there aren't any liquid restrictions for AUS domestic flights? In SA we don't have liquid restrictions for domestic flights and other than in the UK I've never been forced to put liquids into a plastic bag (they're in a fabric toiletry bag)
