It's not unusual to have multiple incentive offers for the same credit card, even simultaneously. Usually, you get whatever bonus was associated with the offer to which you responded.
It would not hurt to call Amex, explain the situation, and cite the superior offer code. If you're told "we're sorry," you could ask for a supervisor. Maybe, just maybe, Amex will give it to you. However, I would not expect success.
