I know the ticket is non-transferable, but can anyone think of a way to make this happen?

One idea I had was to have my wife scan both of our boarding passes at the gate and then just have our friend sit in my seat. Will this cause major problems?

Nothing wrong with switching seats among yourselves when 3 are ticketed and 3 are flying. But when 3 are ticketed and 2 are flying, the person whose boarding pass was NOT scanned will be marked a no-show and her bags (if any) will be removed from the flight delaying everyone.

Not to mention that it is fraud to board an airplane under someone else's name while also simultaneously telling the airplane that you are a no-show. Violation of the contract of carriage to say the least.

It's no longer your D1 seat if you are not flying in it.
