The brown stuff is no longer from Newcastle. These days it's brewed by Heineken in the Netherlands.
Nonetheless I think James's tongue in cheek comment was a bit unfair. Newcastle has as much interesting regional food as other regions in the country. Divven' disparage the Toon, man.
