I think you are confusing BA's responsibility to transport your baggage with an obligation to replace your suitcases. As well as replacements you now see BA having responsibility for disposal of the failed suitcase.
And why on earth would you not think that they had responsibility? If they hadn't broken the case, it wouldn't need disposing of.
