It sounds as if you were too late anyway as your bp didn't work at the bp check so you were pointed to the BA service desks to the left hand side of the bp check? If you don't go past that bp check by 35 minutes before the flight you will fail conformance which means you are offloaded from your onward flight automatically and your existing bp will not work anymore.
For a DOM-INT within T5 connection these are usually very easy, so just a quick bp check and then straight up to the airside departures area - no security. I did one on Friday and was in the lounge less than 5 minutes after getting off the plane.
DOM-INT should be quick and easy, I've done it many times before so know the drill. We were scanned at security 40 minutes before the connecting flight, and refused entry to the terminal. Following a complaint to BA I've been told that the security check is controlled by LHR and is set at 60 minutes.
Had there been anyone at the service desk, some common sense may have prevailed.
