If her name is not on the reservation, it's perfectly reasonable that the hotel would deny giving her a key.

Your post suggests that your wife was the only guest. If you weren't there, the amenity (and the points) were not due.

As an extreme case, what if an angry, estranged spouse showed up and asked for a key?
