I can't speak for non AMB status recognition but if I were you I would be looking at taking the Gautrain to Sandton (a 15 minute journey) and getting the hotel to pick you up from the station around the corner (walkable with hand luggage). If you really need a car for onward travel you should be able to pick one up in Sandton. The traffic from JNB to Sandton can be appalling and the driving experience a little nervy from airport to Sandton. I am a total convert to the Gautrain and in many other cities I would pick a limo transfer for greater convenience but the reliability and short journey time totally wins out. If you have a one night stay in Sandton then it is a total no brainer.
+1. Just call the hotel when you are on the train and the shuttle will be waiting for you at the station (take the elevator up from the level with the ticket counters). Much easier and quicker than by car, especially during afternoon rush hour. Or just walk thru the shopping mall to the hotel (should be around 10 min walk).
The drive from the airport to the hotel is not easy, lots of turns.
Even going back to the airport and picking the car up the next day is easier.
The IC Sandton goes pretty much by the book for upgrades and they are stingy. I would not expect too much, especially on a points stay.
