I can't speak for non AMB status recognition but if I were you I would be looking at taking the Gautrain to Sandton (a 15 minute journey) and getting the hotel to pick you up from the station around the corner (walkable with hand luggage). If you really need a car for onward travel you should be able to pick one up in Sandton. The traffic from JNB to Sandton can be appalling and the driving experience a little nervy from airport to Sandton. I am a total convert to the Gautrain and in many other cities I would pick a limo transfer for greater convenience but the reliability and short journey time totally wins out. If you have a one night stay in Sandton then it is a total no brainer.
