I saw that article when in NYC this week. It was pretty bizarre. A little surprised no one in the article suggested she make a complaint with the NY State Division of Human Rights ... and settle for free weekly dinners for life

(I forget how old she was at the time, but she was just out of school working as an accountant). She wasnt dressed professionally, more like what you'd wear on a hot summer day on a lazy saturday. (it was a saturday in the summer). I told her which hotel and which room number. When she arrived at the hotel, they would not allow her to come up to my room. I'm not sure how they knew she was not a guest (I guess she looked like a local?) Instead, I got a call insisting that I pay a fee (I forget exactly $20 + tax?). At first I thought this was an "extra guest" fee, I explained she was not staying over night. But they said that if any guest visit your room for any amount of time, there is a fee.
There are similar reports in various threads about security stopping guests at various hotels (I think of a report on Mexico City). I really don't want to be questioned about who comes up to my room with me.

And ... I went to the UK last year with a girlfriend who is younger than I am. I handed our passports to the UK Border Force officer who told me to step away while he spoke with her. He just asked her the normal UK Border Force cross exam questions but ended by asking her if everything was OK ... to which she replied we had upgrades to burn and decided to come to London for a three day weekend.
