Hm. Unfortunately it's probably too late to do a whole lot, and getting anywhere would involve dealing with an intermediary layer of agents who don't really know what is going on.
You need two separate things here:
(a) A passive (waitlisted) segment on your PNR, which is your current flight but in PZ class. If this is present you should be waitlisted for all events prior to the gate, and normally your PNR says "Upgrade Requested" or "PZ class Requested". An agent on their terminal may see the former, however.
(b) To be on the upgrade standby list. This is only used by the gate agent after check-in closes, and requires either manual addition or having your reservation tagged with the appropriate SSR code (probably WLPB) and re-doing check-in. A phone agent can do this, but the average one will not know how and I am not 100% confident I am using the right terms.
The former is the more important part in theory, but you've also past most of the window where it matters. However, if there is no PZ space and your flight is reasonably full, your odds of being upgraded weren't great anyway.
