Just to add another data point. Traveling with a companion LAX-JFK and confirmable upgrade space was available. I had 2 SWUs expiring 1/31/19 and 4 expiring in 2021. I was told on the phone by the agent that since the flight was after those first 2 SWUs expired, they would use 2 of my SWUs expiring later.
After the two tickets were booked and the upgrade was confirmed, AA took the 2 SWUs expiring 1/31/19
some agents dont know? the agent that I talked to today told me it is a glitch in AA system and they are aware of it.
