What's the problem? You called to cancel, you asked to cancel, and they cancelled. Didn't they do what you asked them to?
You don't want to ask to cancel if you might want to keep the card (whether you get a retention offer or not). You want to say something like you're considering canceling, but you want to know your alternatives/options/etc are if any. Say you want to cancel, and they have authorization from you to cancel. Say you're considering canceling, and they don't have authorization yet.
