While the planes do report their status automatically its to SkyWest flight operations not AA. Its then up to SkyWest to relay this information to AA. I know the person told you it had to be done manually however am pretty certain this is automated like it is for the rest of AA's regionals so maybe there was a system glitch somewhere.
