I understand the location difference. But for this trip, my wife’s first visit, the river is a plus. I understand the Peninsula is a bit old fashioned and maybe needing an update but is the Athenee upped it game enough to be in the same price class.
What's happening is that Pen has dropped its prices precipitously, while prices in Sukhumvit properties (at least major chains) are on the rise more or less across the board.

Pen now commonly runs a third-night free promo where you can get a suite for around 10k THB. This is also commonly available with FHR rate, which gives you free breakfast as well.

As you've probably noted, Pen is starting to get some negative TA reviews due to tired furnishings. Shangri-La has same problem (plus busloads of Chinese tourists).
