From our online account: We used Chase Pay. We did five purchases using Chase Pay in December. They all show grocery. I will keep an eye on it. This was a 5x deal with Chase Pay. You know how they normally will show one normal point and 4 bonus points. Who knows? Maybe they show Starbucks as grocery for one point when they are doing a promo. That is a stretch I think. But anyway, now you see what I see and the non-answer reply from Chase customer service.

I sent a secure message about this and got this answer. By the way, we did not purchase in a grocery store.
This was my message:
Starbucks was previously listed as restaurant. Now it
shows as grocery. What is up with that?

This is the answer: (Marie is my wife)
Hello Marie,

We understand this is important to you and will be happy
to review your account for the merchant categories.

Marie, we thank you for participating in our reward
program, the Starbucks merchant is classified as
Miscellaneous Food Store. Merchants who accept
Visa/MasterCard credit cards are assigned a merchant code
based on the kinds of products and services they sell.
Chase groups similar merchant codes into categories for
purposes of making rewards offers to you. Chase makes
every effort to include all relevant merchant codes in its
listed categories. However, even though a merchant or the
items that it sells may appear to fit within a listed
category, the merchant may not have a merchant code that
falls within that category. You can visit the below
mentioned link for detailed information about the merchant
classification.

We appreciate your business and thank you for being a
Chase customer.
