Over in the Hilton forum I got a lot of "not safe neighborhood, Hilton Reforma is better" but I didn't find the former true, and I would have been paying cash for the latter because it wasn't a good deal on points (twice as expensive). I dropped by the Hilton Reforma while walking around and I could see why someone would prefer it, but not me at effectively double cost.
And yes, lots of genuine local eateries, history, reasonable walking distance to the Palace of Fine Arts. Would totally repeat a trip to Mexico City.
I'd suggest that the hotel advice for the Hampton Inn location is that "you can much more easily wander into a neighborhood that you don't want to be in (especially at night) from the Hampton location than from the Hilton location."
