As I live in IST, there are not much ST options ( only KE,ME,SV,SU to the eastern side ) and ( AF and KL with horrible schedules and RO without any long-haul connection options ) but I would start to fly SkyTeam ( Delta ) usually when I fly within the US and I know that I wouldn't be able to spend $4500 a year on ST to reach ST Elite status. But anyway, SkyTeam has the best transpacific options and a strong network within Central Europe, Middle East and Far East. So, I wouldn't need the status instantly but I could use the benefits in the future, if I move to a different city.
