On some flights with smaller planes all carry ons are valet checked but the carrys ons are retrieved on the jet bridge. Is such as option available for gate checked bags without having them go to the carousel for international travelers?

Typically you can't gate check for jet bridge retrieval on mainline aircraft, though I suppose you could ask, as they do this for strollers, etc. If you wanted to be sure to keep your luggage, you really have two options:

1) Pack a carry on that can fit underneath the seat in front of you--this will never be force checked
2) Pay for Comfort + seating (or first class) so that you board early and have bin space.
