I feel the same way, and I almost never do what the above poster does in this situation. There are a ton of DL agents, I usually just thank them for their time and call back until I get someone who knows what they're doing. There is too much that can go wrong to trust that an agent that doesn't immediately know what they're doing will do things right.
On the other hand, with an agent that knows what they're doing, it took seven minutes flat to get booked into confirmed J (with seat selection!) on YVR-AMS-DXB and return for two people. With YVR so accessible from Seattle, it really isn't worth waitlisting on the DL SEA-AMS when I can get it confirmed from YVR...
