Probably slow roll out. We see this behavior whenever DL "enhances" the web site.

Instead it opened up a massive band when I selected details where airplane type is off to the left and the prominent feature is a stock image and the pricing (which I already know from the screen I came from -- I just want the additional details on plane type). And then the seat map was annoyingly a completely new page and was difficult to navigate back to the flight options
Sadly delta.com is 100% on the "mobile first" bandwagon, which usually means "don't bother worrying about usability on the desktop". (I could spend the rest of the evening documenting how terrible the site is for a desktop browser, starting with poor use of screen real estate.) While I get that mobile/tablet usage leads desktop, there's no reason they can't all work well. It's not like the only desktop users are a handful of people who can't upgrade past IE 4 and have no idea how a smartphone works.
