I used to do this all the time, buy EU-US-EU to use a low season outbound and get a high season return for a cheaper overall ticket. Absolutely nothing wrong with this ... more complicated to construct travel and if a change is needed it might affect 2 tickets ... if that is not an issue ... all is clear to do this.
