I bet it's quite common. As Kacee points out, if you are "commuting" to SE Asia five or six times a year, it's easy to save hundreds or occasionally thousands of dollars per year in J by booking from Asia to USA instead of vv, useful information for a small business owner funding their own travel. After more than 10 years of doing this, if I ever paid a change fee, it was only to take advantage of a better deal.
