Not against any rules at all. There may be some issues in certain circumstances with nested tickets but this is not that. The only thing you need concern yourself with is Immigration. Presuming you are a US citizen and not a UK citizen, you may be required, on arrival in the UK, to demonstrate an intention to leave, usually done by showing a return ticket.
