Upgrading from Y class to business on AC metal.....
I travel between YYC and Europe quite frequently, and typically spring for a Latitude Western Canadian European Flight Pass for those flights. The reason being it allows me to book Y class at a discount. Up until now, I have always used eUpgrade currency to upgrade from Y to Business. As the amount of eUpgrade currency is becoming quite limited, I have been thinking about using Aeroplan miles to facilitate the upgrade. I am wondering if any AC frequent flyers have had success using Aeroplan points to upgrade via the Star Alliance Upgrade path. My main concern is that upgrade requests made through Aeroplan (using Aeroplan points) might take a back seat to those upgrading using AC's own eUpgrade currency. I had a quick chat with a AC SE agent, and he really didn't know, but told me that he thought that what really mattered was class of fare, and Altitude status. Whether one uses eUpgrades or Aeroplan points would not matter. So, I was wondering if anyone out there might have experience using Aeroplan points to upgrade from Y to business.
The reason I am thinking about switching is that I have to book long haul flights in Flex from time to time, and even though it takes more eUpgrade currency to upgrade, you can still do it. If I used Aeroplan points for my Y class flights, that would free up eUpgrades for my Flex flights, which would be good bang for buck. I am currently a SE 1000 MM, so as long as there is an open seat, I usually get it.
Any advice or comments regarding this approach would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
George
