Yes, that's a longstanding issue with United.com, going back to the Continental days. The flight status page doesn't work properly if you have multiple copies open in different tabs or browser windows.
Yes, all the tabs share one session cookie or something. (Tangent: perhaps that is the inspiration for the practice described here:

If, in any particular tab, you click the 'update result' button, it will bring the focus back to that tab, so that any future information loaded will correspond to the flight it last displayed.
