I presume people don't want the shade open / undimmed in lieu of reading lights. I presume it is for [MENTION=742310]24left[/MENTION]'s purposes - to enjoy and maybe even photograph the view.
If I'm trying to nap, reading lights bother me as much or more than window lights.
I don't care for eye shades either, but am not above putting a pashmina over my head.
And as far as what the "majority" want, I have never been informed that they are taking a poll of any sort.
