Theoretically they are supposed to check if passenger has return ticket or sufficient funds not to become a burden.
I had a TG ticket booked with UA miles from SIN to BKK, and they gave me a REALLY hard time about not having a return ticket until I showed them a few hundred dollar bills and almost half dozen credit cards.
FWIW, I've never been asked for anything at Thai Immigration, though I normally have a return ticket, this was only the second time.
