Recourse options with AMEX (UK) Membership fee refund (failure to cancel card)

I’ve been in contact with AMEX UK to try to recover the membership fee for a period 2017-2018 where they charged me the annual fee after I asked to cancel the card.

I called sometime in 2017 to move my account from the U.K. to the US, which was completed, however despite me asking and understanding that the U.K. account had been closed and I would actually receive a prorata return for the remains of that year, I was billed the 450 for the period 2017-2018 and only noticed when I by chance check my UK Bank Account that I had been charged for 2018-2019 too! They are unable to unearth the recording of this call.

AMEX have refunded the most recent charge but due to the fact I ‘used the card’ in the 2017-18 period are only returning a prorated proportion of this fee since I last used it.

I would say say that this was fair enough, except for the fact my two uses of the card from that year were via PayPal, to which the card was linked but that fact not visible to me when I made the payment. Assuming the card was cancelled I had no reason to believe PayPal could be using it.

I made no use of the other various perks that come with the card over the period (as I have the US Plat now)

Does anyone have any other advice on how I can follow this up further. It’s a principle thing rather than the money or chase for compo, are there any steps I can take in the U.K. or with US AMEX or am I better just letting it go?!

(pretty sure I’d be better letting it go blood pressure wise but quite enjoy these things!)
