Agreed, no one should be penniless on a vacation on the way home, I think it's more of a case where these stranded pax didn't want to pay not that they couldn't pay. Having a aircraft go mechanical far from home is not an easy scenario for any airline. The crew and maintenance were most likely on the phone trying everything possible to get this flight out, thus the long delay. When it was concluded that the aircraft could not be dispatched then the games & blames begin. If WS is willing to properly compensate the pax/guests then what more can they do, it was a screwup sure but by making everyone whole again with appropriate compensation to some degree should be sufficient.
