Not really applicable to UA, but when I check boxes on AS, you need to make sure you get a 'checked baggage' sticker applied, or else the ramp agents tend to send the boxes to cargo. I'm not sure if UA is just better about segregating checked vs cargo, but on other airlines you do need to be mindful of that.
