I'm sorry to hear about this. I don't think they do this as a matter of course. However it may be that you can find availability to other airports if your preferred on is out of reach. I guess there's no harm ringing up and asking.

Don't forget the option to use Avios to greatly reduce your cash payment, I can see a LGW-AMS service tomorrow which is £37 and you can use Avios to get £10 off that. Then train from there?

EDIT: Stuttgart is one of those routes where returns can be cheaper than singles. DUS is sometimes a better option, ditto MUC or LUX.
