I think there are 2 beach properties in Sri Lanka. Maybe a Marriott & Sheraton?

I really enjoyed my time in Phu Quoc. Beautiful property. Walking distance to restaurants, etc. could be debated (it's doable but a little bit of a walk).
Thanks very much! I'll look into Phu Quoc. We've been to Langkawi already (and loved the Andaman there!). Sri Lanka is too far afield for this trip, I'm afraid, though I've been there several times (including once with my wife on vacation) and agree that it's a beautiful island.

We like Sabah for the wildlife and culture, particularly if you don't mind a Four Points (Sandakan). LM Kota Kinabalu is one of our favorites. There are also the two Marriott resorts which I know nothing about but look OK.

Also Penang is wonderful for culture/exploring. Macalister Mansion in Georgetown is well situated and nicely upmarket. For a beach you'd have to go to Batu Ferringhi and Hilton. We like the Four Points Penang occasionally but it can get busy and isn't great location-wise.
Thanks very much for these great suggestions! For no good reason, I hadn't considered Sabah at all (and have never been there). But you've put it on our list of places to definitely go. Except for this trip at least, I'm wondering whether December being the height of the rainy season would put a damper (so to speak) on the experience. I'd very much welcome any advice on this.

We've been to Georgetown but not to other parts of Malaysia that might be more weather friendly in December. I'll look into that.
