The awaited update!
Bit mixed this time, overall good, but some let down bits. I mentioned things but didn't push it, the hotel has been brilliant for a long time. However, this time we stayed the night before they closed for a few days for the Christmas period, and maybe it showed.
On arrival friendly welcome, new member of staff I didn't recognise. Upgraded to Presidential suite as a Christmas treat for loyalty- thank you, very impressed. Room huge, 2 toilets. all the toothbrush/ razor kits etc, kitchenette, fridge, dishwasher, large welcome fruit bowel (we left some which I felt bad about), nespresso with lots of pods, extra milk in fridge. Well though out.
Notice no welcome amenity as before, but didn't want to push this as upgrade was great (water, small wine, mars bar). Did ring down though to say there was no water in the room or bathrobes. Bathrobes quickly arrived. Water never did , but we asked and could take 2 bottles form the lounge later.
Used pool/ gym - it is great here. Long may it continue!
Exec lounge good. Not too busy. No spirits, but they had bottled doom bar which was very nice. Food selection typical. Overall good.
Morning, a newspaper was delivered without asking, must be on record but I really appreciate this. Room warm, aircon working well. Slept very well, and it was very quiet despite a large function the night before.
Breakfast went a bit pear shaped. I did mention it at check out, but did not complain, partly again because of the upgrade, partly beacuase of my affinity for the hotel, partly because it was more anyway than you would get in a typical exec lounge breakfast; but maybe I should have said more. They were closing that day for the Christmas period, which probably affected things.
The 1 coffee machine was broken, 1 machine is ridiculous for the breakfast area, should be 2 at least. Breakfast was steady but not too busy. I asked for coffee and the waitress directed me to use the broken machine! The staff were running around and were working hard, but this meant no coffee- I asked another member of staff who never returned.
Waiting for breakfast was what annoyed me most, and I broke my golden rule. We always wait to be seated/ directed. I feel it is the right thing to do rather than just walk in. We waited at the podium (2 of us), were acknowledged and then stood there even though there were a number of tables empty and ready, breakfast was not too busy. Then the waitress came back and seated 3 men who had arrived after us first, leaving us still standing at the front of the queue. We broke our golden rule and went to sit at a table for 2. Weird!
Breakfast itself was not the normal ST Georges excellent breakfast. Cold selection, including salmon and smoothies, was excellent. Cooked food had run out. There was a long queue, a number of not happy people, and the restaurant was not busy. We left it, feeling fairly full anyway and having decided it was still a better breakfast than some we had taken, and it was free (as a Diamond benefit), but I would not have been happy to have purchased a breakfast voucher and eaten it.
We did mention at checkout. An apology was given. I didn't push it. I will return because the hotel normally is excellent, and I think this was probably a blip with breakfast. Overall the stay was very good, room fantastic, leisure facilities great, exec lounge very good. got to keep it all in context. Thought worth mentioning though in case it happens to someone else.
