Jorge Eliécer Gaitán, a Colombian politician who was assassinated in April 1948 and led to the
Bogotazo 10-hour riot that left much of downtown Bogotá destroyed. This subsequently led to a violent period of political unrest called
La Violencia from 1948 to 1958.
