I would typically spend $80 - 130 per night on a 5* hotel in BKK. These would typically be cat 2 - 4. so 0.65 - 0.5c per Marriott point. In a few weeks I am redeeming at ROS for 1.5c but in this case ROS is overpriced and I want to burn the points. Anyway there are many places where you struggle to get three star hotels for those prices and many cities in Europe, Asia and the Americas where a good 5 star will be multiples of these prices and it is difficult to find places that are cheaper, well at least where people want to travel to.
