St Regis - Osaka in "Winter"
Location The St Regis Osaka is located in the upscale Chuo-ku section of Osaka (there are dealerships for Ferrari, McLaren, Lamborghini, and Bentley within a 5 minute walk) right on Midosuji Blvd, directly over a train station, making it an exceptionally convenient base to explore the Kansai region. During the day there is a lot of activity in the area, but it does not have nearly the nightlife in the immediate area that staying in Umeda or closer to Dotombori would provide, but both of those are easily accessible and it's nice to have a quiet spot around the hotel. The hotel takes up the upper floors of a building, with a small lobby and restaurant on the first floor. Check In I arrived around 9PM local time after nearly 26 hours of travel due to delayed flights, and after finding the building was quickly escorted up to the main lobby by one of the conceriege desk staff on the first floor, while another desk agent took my luggage. The check-in lobby is both impressive and beautiful with soaring ceilings and a massive Christmas tree decked out for the season. The check-in agent invited me to have a seat and quickly processed by check-in, including an upgrade from a standard king room to a Skyline Deluxe Grand King for being a Platinum Premiere with Marriott. Given how exhausted I was I appreciated the efficiency and minimum of fuss from the check-in staff. I was quickly escorted up to my room by Ms. Ako Kamo, who quickly got me settled into my room, stowed my luggage, and ensured I had everything I needed. About the only service not provided was tucking me into bed. Room The upgraded skyline king room was well appointed, roomy, and had a wonderful view looking down through the Minami district. As part of the Platinum ammenties at this hotel they include a 3000 yen per day mini-bar credit, with a well stocked selection. The bathroom includes an enormous Japanese soaker bathtub (sorry for no pictures of it!) and 5 head shower with fantastic water pressure. There is also a TV mounted at the foot of the bathtub. The close was very sizeable for a Japanese hotel and easily stored my meager traveling clothes. Dining While I was staying at The St Regis Osaka I made use of the complimentary breakfast on two mornings (unfortunately I had to be gone before they started serving the last day), which is served in the restaurant on the first floor, the Rue D'Or, and you have the option of either a very nice buffet with both Western and Japanese selections or a menu of set plates. The breakfast was complimentary as a Platinum member and the staff let me sample several of the set plates at each seating. The tea service was outstanding (of course).I also ate dinner one night at La Veduta the Italian restaurant located on the same floor as the St Regis Bar and the check-in lobby. The use of Japanese ingrediants in traditional italian dishes makes for an interesting dining experience. I really enjoyed the Japanese radish ravioli dish. The St Regis Bar almost deserves its own entry, everything about the bar is amazing from the decor, to the selection, to the music, and most especially the bartender Yukari Takayama, who is amazingly friendly, helpful, and pours a great drink. She taught me a few Japanese phrases and introduced me to some great Japanese whiskies I had never heard of, for which I will be eternally grateful.(again sorry for no pictures!) Service Its a St Regis hotel, the service was everything I expected an more. Everyone was very helpful, friendly, and quickly made sure that any requests or questions I had were quickly addressed and answered. The conceirge provided invaluable tips on shopping for specific holiday gifts to take home, which was an amazing help as my shopping time was incredibly limited and it ensured that I had a very focused loop to work in. I cannot say enough good things about the service I received from the entire staff. Outdoor space The Zen rock garden on the patio outside the lobby is a wonderful space any time of year, but is a different world at night when decorated for the holidays. I spent a nice evening relaxing outside with a wonderful whisky visting with some equally awed Canadians. Overall I highly recommend the St Regis Osaka to anyone looking for a high end location to stay in Osaka.
