Also, the Centurion code typically generates a message in all CAP LETTERS to remind the hotel (and the prospective guest) that the rate
must be booked through Amex Centurion travel
only. Attempting to use the rate when not entitled to may subject you to a last minute surprise at check-in. I saw one prospective guest get caught out in exactly that manner while attempting to check-in at a RC.
I think one of the reasons the Centurion may be so generous is high potential guest spend patterns. Many Centurions will spend a lot more money on F&B, spa treatments, etc., etc. Also, many Centurions are in a position to choose hotels for multiple guests, most of whom won't have the Centurion card and will have to pay full freight.
