In all seriousness, isn't squawk # much more relevant to aircraft identification in the era of jet airliners and IFR? If things go sideways badly enough that radio & transponder are both out, being able to
maybe read an underwing registration -- if it's daylight, with clear weather conditions, the aircraft is more or less directly above the observer, but no more than 2000' AGL or so -- doesn't seem like it would be a huge help.
