Wasn’t it recently established that the t&c’s actually state the gifted card uses card expiry date, rather than membership year, so a card gifted on 23/11 will only give 1 year, rather than 2? To get the 2 years, you would have to gift the card after 31/12 when the existing card expires. I have fallen foul of this too, and can confirm there was no soft landing either.
