Talk about nostalgia -- my first international flights in 1972 included British Caledonian from LHR to Singapore and back via Bahrain on a Boeing 707. No overhead bins, just open racks stuffed to the gunwhales with, well, stuff (bags of oranges and other food stuffs as well as clothes, bags etc. as I recall). We were crammed in like sardines but it was really cheap (even for those days).

$700CAD fare including AC flight from Calgary to LHR. It was cheaper to fly the longer route across the Atlantic and over Asia than to fly across the Pacific ($1100 CAD)--plus we could stay longer on the cheaper fare. Shows you the rules were just as convoluted back then. And the discount economy prices haven't changed all that much across the Pacific!
