I called a few days before the annual fee posted for my DL Gold AMEX. This would have been the one year anniversary for the card. I had spent 35K which allowed me to reach medallion status. I called and explained that because of having status I did not need an annual fee card to get a free checked bag. I was transferred to retention which only offered the downgrade to the Blue DL AMEX which I declined. I cancelled the card.
