This warning is in a field meant for property-specific announcements, for the likes of “construction work ongoing” or “compulsory NYE gala dinner”. I suspect Marriott does not review, much less approve, what properties put into this text field.
That said, this policy goes completely against the T&Cs but is nothing new. Even in the “good old days of SPG” there were too many properties playing shenanigans with suite upgrades and the unpublicized rule of one-category-only upgrades was widely followed. Also very common was that properties would only place a very small fraction of their standard suites in the upgrade pool.
The news here is that this hotel is quite straightforward and blatant about its decision not to follow the program’s T&C, whereas usually hotels are very stealth about it.
