The train from Centrale to Padova seems the clear choice for getting to Padova. We'll probably gamble and buy tickets soon on the 11:45 train, as it's much cheaper in advance and trains sometime sell out if you wait until the last minute.

The Milan Centrale to Padova train ticket prices do not jump up a lot, unlike the longer distance, say, Rome to Naples, which by the way, the 90 days ahead price can be as cheap as between Milano and Padova...
A few years ago we bought our tickets soon after the advance purchase window opened (90 days) and paid 9 euro each person. Yet on the day of departure, the same 9 euro was available, although not on every train.
Right now tomorrow 12/31 the cheapest is 17.55 euro but the choices are limited.. 90 days from 12/31, i.e. the advance purchase window opens, the cheapest is 14.90 for the majority of them, and 17.55 for the remaining schedules.
