Hi and welcome:
In answer to your specific question, the BA staff will look at how you are dressed, how you behave, how many are in your party etc. Basically have you the etiquette not to upset the paying passengers.
To increase your chance of being at the top of the list should they bump:
- Check-in at the Concorde/First Class check-in area.
- Be reasonably early.
- At check-in ask if they will consider you for upgrade (ie. "if you are looking for people to upgrade, I would be grateful if you would consider me").
- About 30 mins before departure, leave the comfort of the First Class/Concorde Lounge and pop upto the Exec Club Lounge. Go to the ticket desk (on the right, just past the door) and ask if they have been able to upgrade you.
- Don't get to the gate too early.
- Don't rush through the gate, let them mull over your boarding card.
- Play dumb. Never mention phrases like "SFU".
There are no guarantees here, but what you are doing is giving them the opportunity to upgrade you at every stage of the game.
The real clincher will be operational need, luck and how personable you are!
Nick
